About CMAE and MDP
The CMAE (Club Managers Association of Europe) Management Development Program (MDP) is a prestigious initiative designed for current and aspiring club managers. Through the program, participants can earn the Club Management Diploma (CMD) and move closer to obtaining the globally recognized Certified Club Manager (CCM) certification. The MDP courses focus on essential competencies in club management, catering to general managers, operations managers, and future industry leaders.
MDP 1 is a week-long, intensive course tailored for newly appointed or experienced professionals seeking to deepen their expertise. By the end of the program, participants gain a comprehensive understanding of foundational club operations and form invaluable connections that support their professional growth.
The CMAE unites 13 national associations and serves more than 4,000 members across 40 countries. Members represent a wide range of clubs, including golf, tennis, sailing, rugby, fitness, dining, and city clubs. The association aims to professionalize the club management industry and promote international networking.
Finland’s Role in Hosting MDP 1
Finnish participants have long been active in CMAE events, frequently attending international conferences and training programs. Over the years, discussions about hosting an event in Finland culminated in the successful organization of MDP 1 in Helsinki, marking an important achievement for Finland’s golf and club industry.
The anticipation for the event quickly turned into an unforgettable experience for both local and international participants. Days were spent in rigorous training sessions at Kalastajatorppa's convention center, while evenings showcased Finnish culture and hospitality. Highlights included a traditional Finnish sauna and ice bath experience, dinners, a hockey game, and the season’s first snowfall, which added a magical touch for international attendees. The program’s format, requiring participants to stay on-site for the entire week, fostered deeper networking and collaboration among the group.
Staffan Tuomolin, Managing Director of Sarfvik and FGMA member, who was involved in the hosting of the event, reflected on the success: "The biggest takeaway was enhancing awareness of Finnish golf and Finland itself. We were initially concerned that Finland might be seen as too remote, but the fully booked program proved otherwise. It was also fascinating that many international attendees came from the UK, Dubai, and Central Europe rather than neighboring countries."
Staffan was very pleased with how the week unfolded: "This was a very important event for us, and I wanted to be present to make sure everything went great and that the organizers got all the support they needed. The group was great, they were really involved, and the diversity made the discussions deeper and more thoughtful."
When a CMAE event is hosted in a new location, the CMAA (Club Management Association of America) sends a representative to participate and assess the event. Jason Koenigsfeld, CMAA’s Chief Learning Officer, appreciated the unique experience in Finland: "It’s the personality of the people. It was the Finnish people who made the week much more personal. Also, to experience the sauna, the food, and the hockey game was fantastic. Also, the engagement of the group participating have been great, that helps the dynamics a lot and make the presenters come alive."
Koenigsfeld also emphasized the importance of local support: "Having someone like Staffan, who has gone all the way to CCM, was incredibly helpful. Local engagement is critical for success, and the global perspective of these programs brings new insights into teaching and the industry overall."
Michael McCormack, representing CMAE, agreed with the sentiment: "It was wonderful to be here; the venue is fantastic, and the delegates made me feel at home. The atmosphere was fantastic, and we all bonded very quickly.” McCormack encouraged professionals to explore development opportunities: "Our goal is to professionalize the industry, and the CCM degree is becoming more valued. These programs aren’t just for networking—they help you enhance your club and provide world-recognized credentials can take you anywhere in the world. Even seasoned professionals can gain new ideas and insights by attending."
Local attendees were equally impressed. Markus Junni, CEO of Golf Pirkkala, remarked: "This was definitely not just a seminar—it was a proper school experience. The structured curriculum and content created a feeling of real development and learning." Junni also highlighted the benefits of the program’s global perspective: "My network has expanded significantly. Staying a week in the same place and sharing experiences with others creates opportunities to learn how things are done in different parts of the world."
Andrea Nyman, Manager of FGMA and CEO of Pickala Rock, added: "I wish everyone could see the importance of programmes like MDP. It gives you international contacts and the chance to learn from people around the world. We all face similar challenges, and the network I’ve built here allows me to seek help and guidance. This programme has, if possible, increased my passion for the industry and given me new ideas for my work."
Finland on the Global Stage
Hosting the MDP 1 program in Helsinki not only elevated the professional skills of attendees but also solidified Finland’s reputation in the global club management community. The event was a remarkable success, leaving a lasting impression on participants and organizers alike.
